10th Cocoa Party (Festival)

We held at the booth of SAGRI – State Secretary of Agriculture, the launch of the 10th State Party (Festival) of Cocoa. It will occur in the city of Tomé-Açú, northeast region of the State of Pará, with the theme: “Cooperatives in Agribusiness of Cocoa”. Largest producer of chili pepper, Tomé-Açú is highlighted by its experiences in agro industry systems, where the cocoa is inserted and has highlighted the importance of the local agricultural economy.

Magazine: 7th edition of the magazine “The Amazon: Science & Development”

In order to disseminate scientific knowledge through regional work done with quality, the Bank of Amazonia has developed an instrument that today is a reference in universities and research institutes across the country: the magazine "The Amazon: Science & Development”. Launched in December 2005, the magazine is an initiative of the strategic project of the company, our initiatives, aimed at creating a scientific journal within the framework of the Bank.

Again the the multidisciplinary journal that publishes research results and original scientific articles on topics Amazon, has launched its 7th year, the stand of the Bank of Amazonia during the FRUTAL AMAZON / IX FLOR PARA, under the coordination of Oderlei Milhomem Araújo - Coordination of library Bank of Amazonia and Marcos Antonio Souza dos Santos - Coordinator of microeconomic and regional studies.

Stamp celebrating the 70 years of Research in the Amazon

                The Unit of Embrapa in Bethlehem promoted the launch on June 26 at the booth of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply - MAPA in partnership with the Post Office, a commemorative stamp for 70 years for Agricultural Research in the Amazon, celebrated until May 2010. 

 Seminar of the Açaí

To discuss marketing, organization of industry and product quality was performed SEMINAR I AÇAÍ, which occurred during the FRUTAL AMAZON / IX FLOR PARA. We had around 250 participants including producers, representatives of business, and technical, non-governmental organizations, among others. The moderator of the event was Mr. Raimundo Sergio Menezes, Superintendent Director of the Northern Region of the Brazilian Fruit Institute - IBRAF.

The seminar raised the main demands of the sector to continue to maintain the growth that the fruit has been developing in recent years. Among the demands were required: the formulation of a diagnosis of the supply chain of açaí, the creation of a certification program, specific funding for culture, construction of ports to handle the export, the organization's marketing plan and marketing and assistance.

I Seminar of the Cocoa Producers from the State of Pará

With the participation of 250 cocoa producers, the seminar brought together farmers, technicians, professionals, and exhibitors representing the fruit of family farming in various producing regions like the Southeast of Pará (Tucumã, São Félix do Xingu), Southwest from Pará (Placas, Medicilândia, Brasil Novo, Altamira, Anapú, Palestina), Northeast of Pará (Tomé-Açú, Acará, Santa Izabel do Pará), the Seminar of cocoa in the State of Pará, an event held by the partnership of the Government of the State of Pará, through the State Secretary of Agriculture - SAGRI with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, via CEPLAC.

Opening the meeting His Excellency the Secretary of Agriculture, Cássio Alves Pereira, spoke about the promising scenario of cocoa plantations of Para, which now accounts for almost 25% of the Brazilian and the progress that the activity will have with the Fund's resources Cocoa of Pará, FUNCACAU instrument created to support the development of agriculture.

The direction of CEPLAC, talked about the national landscape of cocoa plantations in anticipation of a resumption of increased production, given the deficit in the world chocolate market today is 500 thousand tons of dried cocoa beans, which opportunities should be seized by agribusiness Brazilian cocoa, thus creating more opportunities for generating employment and income for the segment, as explanation made by the CEO, Jay Wallace Mota e Silva.

Issues related to marketing, quality, price of cocoa were also presented and discussed with the producers in order to update them on issues relating to domestic and international markets for cocoa. Organic production has been discussed as an alternative to the achievement of better prices in the sector, taking into account that it is offering a certified product, developed to preserve the environment and health of consumers, adding to further assessment by the fair market value given to the production of organic cocoa in the area of Transamazonica.

With the support of the Foundation Viver, Produzir e Preservar (Live, Produce and Preserve) - FVPP and the Secretary of State for Agriculture of the State of Pará - SAGRI, a caravan of 12 producers of organic cocoa, affiliated with six cooperatives of the region of Transamazonica, also had the opportunity to market to stand, cocoa products that are manufactured by hand.

This moment was considered odd for producers, as many contacts and future partnerships have been established. The producers took the opportunity to attend courses and training workshops, so that will provide improvements in the production of cocoa by-products. At the time the producers visited the processing unit's plant in the city of Benevides - Pará, the Natura Cosmetics Company and more closed a sales contract with the company for the year 2009.

Alternatives for financing the activities of the primary processing of cocoa were presented during the lectures developed by the rural credit, thus giving opportunities for communities to produce a better quality cocoa, thereby strengthening the market producer of Pará.

Finalizing the event the discussions turned to issues relating to technical assistance, to look for alternatives to support increasing demand for new farmers interested in entering the field of cocoa production.
